Final for Advanced Animation

So this is the final I came up with for our last animation class while in school. The end was a bit rushed as you can see. I didn't have the time to make it look smoother with all of the rendering time it took. I turned it in after my instructor had already left. I got a good grade on it and it was one of the top 3 in class.

Bending Over Backwards!

Here is a lesson learned that I soon will not forget and probably will have to get used to for the rest of what I hope to be a career in animation.
After thinking I was done with the bending over animation, I asked some fellow students and instructor for feedback and critique. I took the suggestions and ran with them, improving the animation more and more. Every time I would ask again I had more stuff to change.(which was frustrating at first)

The lesson learned was: The animation is never really finished until the director takes it from you! I remember someone saying "films aren't released... they escape!". I know what that means now. So here is the result of another couple of hours tweaking and polishing. I like it now, but might end up finding some way of improving it in the future.

Bending Over Forwards

So I think I will start to post things, little epiphanies if you will, of things I come to understand. Even though these things might be obvious to some, every animator learns them at some point.(I hope)

As a class assignment we had to take a series of frames in an action sequence from a book by Ed Muybridge and animate it. I chose one of a lady bending over with a flower pot in her hand and then standing up into the upright position again.
In this study I learned in order to give the illusion that there is actual weight in the character's hands, I had to have it pivot off of the hips and not just curl the back and lower the hips.

Also I learned it is important to keep the hips directly over the supporting foot to help give the look of weight and resistance. To keep the hand steady on the board I keyed it in FK/IK mode.
Here is the result:

My website launches

Not long now. I just have to upload my content and then http://www.mattmurrayanimation.com will be complete! I just finished setting up the accounts and purchasing the domain and all that jazz. It was a little more confusing than I thought at first. Stay tuned for the unveiling.

UP!

The new stills from Pixar's upcoming film "UP" were posted since the first viewing at Comic-Con this year. They look freakin' sweet. I can't wait to see more. I also heard from a friend that attended Comic-Con that the shadow of a dog you see in Rattatoulle (spelling?) while Remi is running though an apartment building of paris, is a character in the new film. You can check out the images by clicking the link to the Pixar BLOG to the side. Enjoy!

So Let It Be Written, So Let It Be Done!

NO! I didn't decide to make one of these since everyone else has one too! I simply thought it would help motivate me to express myself and be more open with my artwork and animation, and possibly be able to network a little easier. I also hope to use this to help others pursuing careers in or near the same field as I, by posting links to rather useful information. Well, we will see what happens!
